Exciting Expansion: How Grant Funding is Enhancing Dental Services at Carmel’s Health Department & Trinity Free Clinic

The Hamilton County Health Department has distributed over $3.2 million in Health First Indiana (HFI) grants to local organizations since 2024. This funding, originating from Senate Enrolled Act 4, aims to support evidence-based health programs in the community.

A prime example of this support is the Trinity Free Clinic in Carmel. Thanks to the HFI grant, the clinic has been able to double its free dental services for low-income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals. They’ve also bought advanced dental equipment that allows them to provide same-day crowns and dentures, making dental care more accessible and efficient.

Mel Wischmeyer, Executive Director of Trinity Free Clinic, expressed gratitude for the HFI funding. She highlighted how crucial dental care is for many people. For those in need, it’s not just about fixing teeth; it restores confidence and improves overall health.

In one case, the clinic helped a man who had been unable to eat or speak properly for two years because of dental issues after a violent attack. With the clinic’s help, he received the care he needed to regain his health and dignity.

Wischmeyer shared that stories like his are not rare. Many people face challenges at work or in social situations due to poor oral health. For instance, a teenager felt embarrassed during lunch at school because of her retainer. These stories show how dental care can change lives.

HFI funding has also strengthened other local programs focusing on mental health, maternal and child health, chronic disease prevention, and emergency preparedness.

Jason LeMaster, the Hamilton County Health Department Administrator, is enthusiastic about the positive effects of these grants. He believes that partnerships with organizations like Trinity Free Clinic are vital in ensuring everyone in the community, especially the underserved, receives necessary healthcare.
