The Syracuse women’s tennis team is gearing up for its fall season, kicking off with the Villanova/UD Invite this weekend, from September 19 to September 21. This tournament is hosted by Villanova University and the University of Delaware, with matches taking place at both locations.
Syracuse brings back a strong roster, featuring six returning players from last year. Sophomore Monika Wojcik led the team last season, notching 12 singles victories and 11 doubles wins. She had an impressive 5-1 record in ACC singles play during her freshman year.
Another key player is Serafima Shastova, who also returns for her second year. She earned 12 singles wins last season and collaborated with Wojcik for eight doubles victories.
Junior Nelly Knezkova contributed 10 singles wins and seven doubles wins last year. She played the top spot in singles for seven matches and the first court for doubles in 15 matchups.
Sophomore Haram Kim had a strong debut season, securing two wins in the sixth spot, including a notable victory over Fordham.
Constance Levivier is now a senior and is entering her third season with the Orange. Last year, she secured four singles wins, including two at the fourth position.
Senior Anastasia Sysoeva also returns after participating in 19 matches last season in both singles and doubles, achieving nine doubles victories—a strong performance at the second court.
As the season starts, the Syracuse team looks poised to build on last year’s momentum and make an impact in the upcoming tournament.
Sports analysts suggest that maintaining a strong returning roster is crucial for success in collegiate sports, as familiarity can enhance team cohesion and performance. Historical data from the NCAA shows that teams with a solid core of returning players often have better seasons than those that start anew.
