Exciting Groundbreaking at Northeastern Illinois University: Introducing the New Education Building!

Northeastern Illinois University recently broke ground on a new Education Building that will house the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education. This project marks an important step for the university and its mission to prepare future educators.

The new building, designed by SmithGroup, will feature 24 classrooms, 12 conference rooms, and 80 private offices. It aims for LEED Silver certification, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

President Katrina E. Bell-Jordan expressed excitement about the building’s potential to enhance education at the university. “This state-of-the-art facility will support our legacy of preparing educators,” she said. Expect the building to open in 2027.

Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the project, stating, “Investing in education is investing in our future.” His sentiment echoes a broader push within the state to provide modern facilities for higher education amid rising demands for skilled teachers.

Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam, who represents the area, praised the project. “This building will bring new opportunities for students and the community,” he noted.

The Education Building will span 189,673 square feet and will cost approximately $125.4 million. The Illinois Capital Development Board is overseeing the project to ensure it meets state standards for quality and safety.

In many ways, this project echoes a history of educational investment in Illinois. The university was founded in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School, the first institution dedicated to teacher training in the region. Over 85,000 students have graduated, significantly impacting local communities.

Dean Thomas Philion emphasized the role the new building will play in supporting both education students and community services. With better facilities, the university aims to continue its leadership in teacher and counselor education.

This new initiative demonstrates Northeastern Illinois University’s commitment to modernizing its educational offerings, addressing the needs of students, and enhancing the learning environment for future educators.
