Cheney Brothers, a Florida-based food distributor, is increasing its footprint in Florence County with a hefty investment of $42.5 million. This expansion not only cements their presence in South Carolina but also adds 85 new jobs to the local economy, bringing their workforce total to 365.
The company plays a vital role in the food supply chain, connecting manufacturers with various businesses like restaurants, hospitals, and schools. They provide a diverse range of products, including meat, dairy, and frozen foods, and this expansion marks their first distribution center in South Carolina.
Byron Russell, the CEO of Cheney Brothers, expressed confidence in the state’s welcoming business environment, stating, “We have been greatly impressed by the business-friendly attitude of South Carolina. We look forward to a bright future in this state.”
This development is a significant boost for local employment. Governor Henry McMaster noted that these new jobs present greater opportunities for residents, enhancing South Carolina’s reputation as a thriving business hub.
The local government has also extended support through job development credits and a $200,000 grant aimed at site preparation and construction costs. Jerry Yarborough, chairman of the Florence County Council, emphasized the long-term benefits this expansion will provide to the community, bringing stable and quality career opportunities.
Another noteworthy feature of this expansion is the establishment of a culinary test kitchen, which will serve as a creative space for local chefs to innovate and refine their culinary skills. Rocky Pearce, chairman of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership, commented on the unique collaboration it fosters between industry and artistry.
