Exciting Growth: West Virginia University at Parkersburg Sees Surge in Student Enrollment!

PARKERSBURG — As the new school year begins, West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) is experiencing a welcomed surge in enrollment. President Torie Jackson announced that the student count has risen by 3%, with 2,597 students on campus as of August 18, compared to 2,515 a year earlier. This translates to an increase of 82 students.

Additionally, the number of Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) has gone up by 8%, totaling 1,808.80 this year. This includes students taking specific classes for various educational purposes. Jackson mentioned they could still see an influx of around 200 last-minute and early college enrollments.

“So much is happening at WVUP,” Jackson said in a recent Board of Governors meeting. “Our enrollment is growing alongside our programs and opportunities.”

The university has also opened part of the new Innovation and Technology Center, located at the former Ohio Valley University campus in Vienna. Jackson expressed gratitude for the advancements despite challenges while securing and renovating the facility. “It’s been a difficult path, but we’re excited to offer students a state-of-the-art facility.” Currently, 159 students and faculty are making use of this new space.

While many colleges are cutting funding due to economic pressures, WVUP is hiring more staff, reinforcing its role as an economic driver in the community. Jackson shared details about the STAND program, aimed at providing skilled trade apprenticeships, and an Artificial Intelligence Task Force led by Kyle Lancaster. This task force focuses on integrating AI across various areas within the college to enhance student support and operational efficiency.

In a recent opening ceremony, Stephen Lloyd, director of the WV Office of Drug Control Policy, shared his personal story of overcoming addiction. His powerful narrative served as a reminder that behind statistics are real lives. “We need to understand the full story of our students, some of whom come from difficult backgrounds,” Jackson said. “Viewing education this way allows us to provide not just knowledge, but stability and hope.”
