I’ve been taking a break from Overwatch, and now’s the perfect time for Season 2 to revive my interest and get me back into the game. This new season brings exciting changes: a fresh hero, updated maps, and a collaboration with Diablo. One of the highlights is Soldier: 76 getting his first Mythic Skin. After four years, I hoped for something fantastic, but I’m feeling a bit let down.
First, the good news: we’ve got Sierra, a new damage hero who uses drones. She becomes the 51st character in Overwatch and hails from the same security group as Pharah. It’ll be interesting to see if their stories connect, even just by reputation.
The season also reintroduces post-match accolades, celebrating player achievements like high damage and skillful play. There’s a new voice chat lobby too, which I hope can be muted. Not everyone wants to chat with strangers, right?
The revamped Antarctic Peninsula map and various new skins are in the mix, along with Ramattra joining the Stadium mode and Genji getting a Mythic weapon. But the main highlight is Soldier: 76’s Volted Overdrive skin. He looks like a cyborg with flashy neon armor, reminiscent of Sojourn’s design from last year. My main issue? Soldier is supposed to be 58 years old, yet Blizzard keeps giving him skins that harken back to his younger days as a blonde heartthrob. The initial design showcased him with blonde hair, and the others still depict him as youthful and rugged, ignoring his current grizzled persona.
This character evolution reflects a trend in gaming, where nostalgia often overshadows character development. Even in gaming communities, users are discussing this on platforms like Twitter, expressing mixed feelings about how aging characters are portrayed. Many players believe that embracing older versions of these characters would add depth to the story.
At its core, Soldier’s transition from a charming soldier to a gruff vigilante is key to his role in the game’s lore. It’s a missed opportunity to embrace his age and complexity during one of his big moments. Just let him be an old man, Blizzard!
