New Orleans –
Senior setter Alexa Washington led the Mean Green volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tulane at Fogelman Arena. The match was intense, with scores of 28-26, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25, and 15-7.
Washington had a remarkable performance, finishing with 15 kills, 26 assists, and 24 digs. With this, she made history as the first player in the University of North Texas (UNT) volleyball program to achieve a triple-double.
“Honestly, this moment feels surreal,” Washington shared. “I never dreamed I could accomplish something like this. The team and the culture we’re building are special, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
The match showcased strong teamwork, with UNT recording season-highs in multiple categories: 69 kills, 213 attacks, 63 assists, and 104 digs.
Head coach Dave Fleming expressed his pride in Washington’s achievement. “It’s incredible that she got the first triple-double in UNT volleyball history. She’s an amazing player, and we wouldn’t have won without her tonight,” he said.
Three players contributed significantly to the scoring. Alongside Washington, Reagan Bedell had 16 kills, and Jahniya Jackson followed with 14. Setter Sidney Soria also made an impact, notching her third career double-double with 23 assists and 15 digs.
This match highlights a growing trend: female athletes breaking new ground in sports.
In 2021, a study showed a 25% increase in female participation in college sports over the past decade. More athletes are visible in arenas that once felt exclusive, inspiring future generations.
Washington’s accomplishment can resonate beyond volleyball, as women continue to make strides in all sports. Fans can next catch the Mean Green in action against ECU on Friday, October 17, at the UNT Volleyball Center, streaming live on ESPN+.
With moments like these, women in sports are shifting perceptions and pushing boundaries every day.
