Apple is gearing up for a major iPhone redesign over the next few years. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is responding to increased competition in artificial intelligence (AI) from other tech giants.
Next month, Apple plans to roll out the iPhone Air, a slimmer version designed as a replacement for the iPhone 16 Plus. In 2025, we can expect Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which may come with five cameras and, much like the iPhone Air, will lack a SIM card slot. By 2027, for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, Apple will introduce a curved-glass model, moving away from the flat design used for the past several years.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says, “2025 won’t be revolutionary. But it’s setting the stage for significant changes in 2026 and 2027.” This has fans of the iPhone intrigued.
Meanwhile, Apple is feeling the heat from competitors like Google. The upcoming Pixel 10 boasts AI features like real-time voice translation, smart photography assistance, and AI-powered search capabilities. The Wall Street Journal’s Nicole Nguyen pointed out that Apple is falling behind in integrating AI into its devices.
PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster warned that if Apple doesn’t adapt, the iPhone could become less relevant. With Google leading the way in embedding AI into smartphones, users might switch to Android devices for that enhanced experience. She stated, “Apple can’t match that today.” Most people resist switching operating systems, but they could be tempted if a compelling AI-powered Android comes along.
Apple is aware of these challenges. The company has faced some turbulence, including delays with Siri and talent losses. However, they are ready to pivot. There are plans for a revamped Siri using advanced language models, which could debut on iPhones and iPads soon.
As technology evolves, the competition will surely intensify. Keeping an eye on these changes will be essential for both fans and potential buyers. The future of smartphones, especially with AI integration, looks promising yet uncertain.
