The market is set to be the first co-op grocery store in Genesee County, where members have a say in its operation and shared profits. Currently, over 1,000 individuals have signed up for membership, investing either $250 or $500, depending on whether they are individuals or organizations.

Recent funding successes include a $1.5 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, bringing their total contributions to over $3.6 million in recent years. This funding aims to secure suppliers, purchase inventory, and hire around 30 employees.

For Flint residents, the market offers a hopeful solution in an area that has lost many grocery chains, including Hamady Complete Food Centers, which closed just months after opening due to low sales. Rev. Reggie Flynn of the North Flint Reinvestment Corporation highlights how vital this market is for local families. “It’s a critical service that’s been a long time coming,” he shared, reflecting on the project’s upward battle with funding and rising costs. Despite delays, Flynn remains committed: “God gave me this assignment.”
