BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Kentucky’s WIC program just got a significant makeover. The new food packages offer families more flexibility while keeping up with modern nutrition standards.

These updates come around every ten years to make sure the program aligns with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s guidelines. They aim to support a wide range of participants, including children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Lana McChesney, a nurse and WIC Coordinator with the Barren River District Health Department, emphasized, “Many changes affect our families, especially in different food groups.”

What’s New in the Food Packages?

One of the biggest changes is the expanded choices in whole grains, breads, and cereals. However, some items, like certain yogurts, are being phased out for not meeting the updated nutrition guidelines, especially concerning sugar limits.

Portion sizes are also adjusting. For instance, some families might see smaller amounts of juice to help better balance nutrition and dietary advice.

Participants now have more options to substitute items. For example, families can swap eggs for alternatives like peanut butter or beans. This change is helpful for those with allergies or personal preferences.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” McChesney said. “We aim to provide food packages that suit individual needs.”

Transition and Benefits

The transition to these new food packages started earlier this month and is now active across the state. Benefits may update automatically, but some might need adjustments during the next WIC appointment.

Families are encouraged to use the WIC Shopper app. It’s a handy tool to check updated food lists and eligibility details.

Officials remind families that WIC benefits work on a “use it or lose it” basis each month. Any unused benefits will not be carried over.
