New Delhi: The INS Magdala, the sixth vessel in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC), was launched on Saturday at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi. The event featured Renu Rajaram and Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, along with officials from the Indian Navy and CSL.
This ship is designed and built entirely in India, marking a key step toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing. It’s expected to be delivered by the end of October 2025. The ASW SWCs will boost underwater awareness and capabilities in anti-submarine warfare and mine laying.
Powered by three diesel engines with waterjets, the INS Magdala includes advanced sensors, such as Hull Mounted Sonar and Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS). Armed with cutting-edge torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, and a 12.7 mm gun, it is equipped for a variety of naval missions.
Launching the Magdala is a crucial milestone for the Indian Navy, reflecting a commitment to improving domestic shipbuilding and defense technology. With over 80% indigenous content, the ship will significantly strengthen the Navy’s operations in the Indian Ocean Region.
This project aligns with the Indian government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, promoting local manufacturing. The first keel for this ASW SWC project was laid in December 2024, underscoring the swift progress of the program. The contract for these ships was awarded on April 30, 2019.
