Exciting Leadership Change: Alex Smith Appointed Director of External Affairs at the University of West Florida

The University of West Florida is excited to announce that Alex Smith will be the new Director of External Affairs starting March 3, 2025. Before joining UWF, Smith worked for the City of Pensacola as a Constituent and Legislative Liaison and as a Special Assistant to Mayor D.C. Reeves. In his new position, he will manage external relations for the Office of the President, focusing on key initiatives that align with the University’s strategic goals.

UWF President Martha D. Saunders expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I’m looking forward to working with Alex as we strengthen our service to the community, the region, and the state. His energetic approach will serve us well.”

In this role, Smith will help guide UWF’s vision and support the development of its Master Plan. He will work on legislative strategies that involve relationships with federal, state, and local governments, collaborating closely with the UWF Board of Trustees and other boards to meet the University’s goals.

“I am honored to step into the role of Director of External Affairs at the University of West Florida,” Smith stated. He recognizes the strong legacy of academic excellence and community involvement at UWF. He looks forward to partnering with Dr. Saunders and her leadership team to create lasting partnerships that benefit students, staff, and faculty both within and outside Northwest Florida.

During his time with the Mayor of Pensacola, Smith was instrumental in securing over $75 million in state and federal funding. He served as a key link between the Mayor’s office, various boards, and the State Legislature, showcasing his ability to navigate complex government relationships. Before his city role, he managed campaigns and worked as a senior legislative director for TSE Consulting.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Florida State University, where he graduated Cum Laude. He is also pursuing a Master of Business Administration from FSU.
