The Arkansas State University System Board of Trustees recently appointed Chancellor Todd Shields as the system’s new president, starting July 1. Shields has a solid background in academia, having spent nine years as a dean at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He took on the role of ASU’s chancellor in 2022 and will now succeed Brendan Kelly, who left to lead Eastern Michigan University.
Shields emphasized his deep commitment to the Arkansas State system. He stated, “I will continue to be a strong advocate for A-State, working to ensure that the university has every opportunity to build upon its success.” His vision indicates a belief in the university’s potential to positively impact many lives.
The ASU System, based in Little Rock, educates about 39,000 students yearly across its campuses in Arkansas and Querétaro, Mexico, along with a global online presence. Calvin White, currently the executive vice chancellor and provost at Arkansas State, will serve as interim chancellor until Shields officially takes over.
Shields brings extensive experience from his previous roles, including being the founding director of the Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society. He holds bachelor’s degrees in political science and psychology from Miami University in Ohio and both a master’s and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Kentucky.
In recent years, there has been a growing focus on the importance of effective leadership in education, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2021 survey from the American Council on Education indicated that more than 60% of college leaders felt their institutions needed to adapt to new educational environments. This illustrates the critical role of visionary leaders like Shields in navigating change.
