Exciting Leadership Change: Drake University Welcomes New Provost from Butler University

Drake University has appointed Joseph M. Valenzano III as its next provost, set to begin on July 1, 2026. He currently serves as the Dean of the College of Communication at Butler University. This change comes as the current provost, Sue Mattison, plans to retire.

As provost, Valenzano will oversee Drake’s seven schools and colleges. His experience highlights his belief in the transformative power of education, particularly in a liberal arts setting. Drake University President, Marty Martin, emphasized Valenzano’s strong leadership skills and commitment to fostering innovation and student success.

Valenzano was chosen following a thorough search process that included more than 80 applicants. His appointment was unanimously approved by the Drake Board of Trustees in January.

This leadership change reflects ongoing efforts in higher education to adapt to new challenges. Colleges are prioritizing academic excellence and student engagement, especially in a post-pandemic world. Recent data suggests that more students are seeking flexibility in their education, driving institutions to rethink their approaches.

Higher education expert Dr. Linda Selden notes, “Effective leaders in academia need to embrace change. The ability to innovate will be crucial for institutions to meet the evolving needs of students.”

Valenzano’s arrival promises to align with these shifting demands, potentially enriching the academic landscape at Drake University.
