SALISBURY, MD—Salisbury University has welcomed Dr. Matthew Laurent as the new dean of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). He officially started on January 8.

Dr. Laurent joins SU after seven years at Tarleton State University. He held several positions there, including head of the Health and Human Performance department and dean of the School of Health and Clinical Professions.

Dr. Laurie Couch, SU’s provost, praised Laurent’s vision for the college, stating it aligns well with the university’s mission to prepare graduates who are ready to serve their communities. She expressed excitement about the fresh ideas and leadership he brings.

In his new role, Laurent will oversee the schools of Health Sciences, Nursing, and Social Work, along with the Center for Healthy Communities and the Richard A. Henson Medical Simulation Center. He aims to foster collaboration and innovation within the college, enhancing the educational experience for students.

At Tarleton State, Laurent expanded undergraduate and graduate programs to meet the demands of the job market. He also played a key role in developing new spaces for interprofessional education and improved workload policies for faculty, ensuring they had time for curriculum development and mentorship.

Laurent has a strong background in research, with over 15 years focused on sports performance, strength training, and rehabilitation. Before Tarleton, he was the exercise science program coordinator at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

He holds a Ph.D. in human performance and exercise physiology from the University of Alabama, along with a master’s and bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise sciences from West Texas A&M University.

With his experience and vision, Dr. Laurent is poised to make a significant impact at Salisbury University and in the broader community.
