Exciting Leadership Change: University of St. Francis in Joliet Welcomes New President

The University of St. Francis has named Ryan C. Hendrickson as its new president, making him the 10th leader of the institution. This announcement was made on February 18, 2024.

Hendrickson is currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Illinois University. He brings 26 years of experience from EIU, where he has served as a senior administrator and a professor of political science. His roles included acting dean of the College of Health and Human Services and acting dean of Booth Library.

Arvid C. Johnson, the current president, will retire in May, and Hendrickson will step into his new role on June 1. Sister Jeanne Bessette, the president of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, expressed confidence in Hendrickson’s strong background, saying it would help strengthen the university’s mission in modern times.

Hendrickson, a practicing Catholic, is eager to integrate his faith into his leadership role. He is particularly drawn to the Franciscan Catholic identity of the university. He noted that the university has made impressive strides, especially in student retention and innovative programs, which help it stand out among its peers.

He highlighted USF’s international programs and praised its high-quality graduate offerings. Hendrickson believes the university must keep enhancing these programs to attract more students effectively. With his extensive background in Illinois higher education, he plans to evaluate current offerings and identify areas for growth.

The Board of Trustees selected Hendrickson after a thorough search process led by a 20-member committee of trustees, faculty, students, and alumni. He was chosen from over 50 applicants, vetted by Academic Search, a respected firm specializing in college executive recruitment.

Steven Hernandez, a trustee and chair of the search committee, remarked on Hendrickson’s wealth of experience and knowledge, stating it would greatly benefit the university.

In addition to his administrative roles, Hendrickson has a solid academic background. He has authored over 70 chapters and articles and written three books, including “The Clinton Wars,” “Diplomacy and War at NATO,” and “Obama at War.” His research interests have significantly enriched his teaching, making the material more engaging for his students.

While he enjoys administration, Hendrickson occasionally misses the classroom. He finds purpose in shaping the university’s mission and advancing it on a larger scale. His academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Marquette University and both a master’s and a doctorate in political science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Hendrickson lives with his wife Tece and has three children: daughters Marguerite and Frances, and son Ryan.
