BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU Athletics has parted ways with football head coach Brian Kelly, effective immediately. This decision was shared by Athletic Director Scott Woodward on Sunday.
“When Coach Kelly came to LSU four years ago, we had high hopes for championships,” Woodward stated. “Unfortunately, the success we expected didn’t happen, so I decided to make this change after last night’s game. I appreciate the support from the LSU Board and Interim President Matt Lee. We wish Coach Kelly and his family the best.”
This season, the Tigers have struggled, with a 5-3 record and a 2-3 finish in SEC play, most recently losing to No. 3 Texas A&M. Under Kelly’s leadership, LSU totaled 34 wins and 14 losses over four seasons, including three bowl game victories. They made it to the SEC Championship in his first season in 2022, under quarterback Jayden Daniels, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy and was a top NFL draft pick.
Interestingly, Kelly is noted as the winningest active coach in NCAA Football, boasting 323 career victories. He had an impressive track record at home, winning 23 out of 26 games at Tiger Stadium, especially shining during night games.
For the rest of the 2025 season, associate head coach Frank Wilson will step in as interim head coach. Woodward emphasized his commitment to excellence in LSU football, stating, “We are dedicated to maintaining high standards and believe LSU should be at the top of college football. We will start a national search for a new head coach immediately.”
Fan reactions to this news have been mixed. Social media is buzzing with speculation about potential candidates. Some alumni express disappointment over the change, wishing Kelly success, while others are eager for a fresh start.
In the broader context, coaching changes in college football aren’t uncommon. According to a recent study from the NCAA, over 23% of college football head coaches were changed last year. This suggests a trend towards prioritizing immediate results, especially in competitive programs like LSU.
As this transition unfolds, it will be interesting to see how LSU’s football community rallies around its athletes and what the future holds for both the program and the new coach.
