SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah has decided to make a change in its men’s basketball leadership. Head coach Craig Smith is no longer with the team. Assistant coach Josh Eilert will step in as interim head coach for the rest of the 2024-25 season.
In a statement, officials expressed gratitude for Craig’s dedication during his time in Salt Lake City. He brought exciting moments and victories to the program. However, there are higher ambitions for the men’s basketball team. The goal is to consistently compete in the NCAA Tournament and establish a strong presence in the Big 12 Conference.
After assessing the team’s performance, the university believes it is time for a change. They emphasize their commitment to supporting Coach Eilert and the staff as they move forward this season. The school has also focused on enhancing the men’s basketball program by investing more in coaching staff, improving salaries, and expanding NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) opportunities for players.
The search for a new head coach has already started. The aim is to find the right leader to help restore the program’s national reputation. Best wishes go to Craig and his family as they move on to new opportunities.
