Exciting Leadership Update: APSU’s Eriksson College of Education Appoints Dr. Charles Gonzalez and Dr. Christi Maldonado as New Associate Deans

Austin Peay State University - APSUIn Clarksville, TN, the Eriksson College of Education at Austin Peay State University (APSU) has welcomed two new associate deans: Dr. Charles Gonzalez and Dr. Christi Maldonado. Both started their roles this month and bring valuable experience to the college.

Dr. Charles Gonzalez steps in as the associate dean of belonging and student success. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning and coordinates the Master of Arts in Teaching programs. He also oversees Inclusivity Initiatives. His focus is on helping teachers become more culturally relevant and developing new teaching methods that support diverse learning environments.

In his new position, Gonzalez will lead efforts to recruit and retain students while promoting inclusivity throughout the college. He plans to work with various programs to boost student success.

“This role feels like a natural step for me. I’m excited to continue fostering a welcoming community for both students and staff at APSU,” Gonzalez said.

Dr. Christi Maldonado is the new associate dean of assessment and accreditation. With over 20 years of experience in education, she has worked as a teacher and assistant principal in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System. Most recently, she was an assistant professor and graduate coordinator for the Aspiring Administrator Preparation Network at APSU. Last year, she participated as a faculty fellow with the Tennessee Grow Your Own Center.

Maldonado expressed her gratitude for the opportunity: “I am honored to support the incredible work of our faculty and staff in training future educators and leaders.”

In her role, she will manage the college’s accreditation efforts and work closely with others to ensure APSU meets high educational standards.

“Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Maldonado bring fresh leadership to our college. Their skills in student success and accreditation will enhance our programs and support our growing student body,” said Dr. Lisa Barron, interim dean of the Eriksson College of Education.

The Eriksson College of Education is dedicated to training effective teachers and leaders who can make a difference in schools and communities today. Their programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and include various licensure and non-licensure options.
