David B. Berkowitz has been appointed as the new vice president for research at the University of Georgia, starting July 1. He brings a wealth of experience from his role as assistant director at the National Science Foundation, where he managed around $1.7 billion aimed at advancing research in fields like chemistry and physics.
Before that, Berkowitz was the director for the chemistry division at the NSF and contributed to shaping science policy at high levels, including the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Back at the University of Nebraska, he co-led the Nebraska Drug Discovery and Development Pipeline, a collaboration that has drawn roughly $46 million in federal support. This initiative focuses on innovative treatments, including those for acute radiation syndrome.
Berkowitz’s research sits at the crossroads of chemistry and biology, making significant strides in areas like biocatalysis and drug discovery. His dedication has earned him fellowships in prestigious organizations like the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society. His work in research and education has been recognized nationally, cementing his reputation as a thought leader in his field.
