The University of West Florida has appointed Manny Diaz Jr. as its seventh president. He has been serving as interim president since July. The Board of Trustees made this decision during a special meeting, and his confirmation is pending from the Florida Board of Governors.
Chair of the Board, Rebecca Matthews, expressed confidence in Diaz’s abilities. She noted his strong engagement with students and faculty during his interim role. “We believe his leadership will help UWF grow and have a lasting impact on Northwest Florida,” she said.
Before joining UWF, Diaz was Florida’s Commissioner of Education, leading initiatives across K-20 education. His background includes experience as a teacher, administrator, and policymaker.
“I’m honored by the trust placed in me,” Diaz stated. He emphasized his excitement about collaborating with faculty, staff, and the community to enhance UWF’s mission and opportunities for students.
The selection process for president followed strict regulations set by the Florida Board of Governors, which involved stakeholder feedback, candidate screening, and recommendations.
Interestingly, the role of university presidents has evolved over the years. In recent decades, many have been expected to focus not only on academic leadership but also on community engagement and fiscal responsibility.
According to a 2022 survey from the American Council on Education, 68% of college presidents felt that their institutions needed to address mental health services for students more effectively. This highlights an ongoing challenge faced by higher education leaders today.
