March 13, 2026

Hampden-Sydney College is excited to announce that renowned historian Allen C. Guelzo will speak at the Commencement Exercises on May 9, 2026. Noted historian Tracy McKenzie will give the baccalaureate address the evening before, at 5 pm.

Dr. Guelzo is a leading expert on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. He serves as a senior research scholar at Princeton University and has won prestigious awards, including three Lincoln Prizes. His popular books, such as Gettysburg: The Last Invasion, have deeply influenced how we understand this pivotal period in American history.

Dr. McKenzie, a respected professor at Wheaton College, focuses on the link between faith and American history. His recent book, We the Fallen People, examines the Founding Fathers and their vision for democracy. He encourages students to learn from history and apply those lessons to today’s challenges.

Both speakers will highlight the importance of a liberal arts education and civic leadership during their talks. As we celebrate our 250th anniversary, their insights will remind graduates of their responsibilities as future leaders. Dr. Larry Stimpert, H-SC President, emphasizes the necessity of fostering good citizens who uphold civic virtue.

Inclement weather permitting, the ceremonies will take place on the historic Venable Lawn, adding to the event’s significance.
