Canton — St. Lawrence University is gearing up for its 2025 Commencement ceremony on May 18. This year, the university will honor two distinguished individuals: Mike Ranger ’80, P’17, and Stephanie Ratcliffe P’13, ’16, for their admirable contributions to both the university and the North Country region.

Professor Jeff Frank, a beloved educator, will share inspiring words as the keynote speaker for the graduating class.

Mike Ranger ’80, P’17 to Receive Honorary Doctorate

Mike Ranger has dedicated over 40 years to St. Lawrence University, making a significant impact as a trustee. He has held various leadership roles, enjoying a long tenure on the Board of Trustees since 1993. Ranger stands out not just in academia; he has also made a name for himself in banking and private equity, holding key positions at major firms like Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette and Covanta Holdings. His efforts have earned him an honorary doctorate, recognizing his unwavering support for the university.

Alongside his wife, Virginia, Ranger has actively contributed to nonprofit organizations, demonstrating a commitment to community and education. Their children, Maggie and Alex, are both St. Lawrence alumni, furthering the family’s deep connection to the university.

Stephanie Ratcliffe to Receive North Country Citation

Stephanie Ratcliffe, the executive director of The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, will be recognized with the North Country Citation for her work in environmental education. Under her leadership, The Wild Center has gained national acclaim as a hub for climate science since it opened in 2006. Ratcliffe’s initiatives, like making the museum New York State’s first LEED-certified museum and launching a popular climate solutions exhibit, showcase her dedication to sustainability.

She has also been instrumental in youth climate advocacy, leading delegations to international conferences and establishing the Youth Climate Summit model, which has been adopted elsewhere. Beyond her work in Tupper Lake, Ratcliffe has a history with institutions like the Smithsonian and serves on multiple board positions.

Jeff Frank to Address the Class of 2025

Jeff Frank, a respected Professor of Education at St. Lawrence since 2014, will deliver the Commencement address. Known for his thoughtful approach to teaching, Frank engages deeply with his students. He has received several teaching awards and has contributed to various educational initiatives on campus.

Frank’s work has gained national attention, appearing in major publications and international presentations. His academic journey includes a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University, enriching his insights in education.
