CINCINNATI — The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team is set to face the Marquette Golden Eagles in Milwaukee this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. You can catch the game on ESPN+.
The Bearcats kicked off their season with a strong 17–9 win against Xavier. Sophomore Alyse Keels stole the show, scoring six goals, including a stunning behind-the-back shot. Cincinnati jumped out to a quick 9–1 lead in the first half and went into halftime at 10–2.
Morgan Handzel, a sophomore who transferred from Xavier, had a standout performance, dominating the draw circle with 14 draw controls. This notable effort helped Cincinnati maintain a commanding edge in draw controls, 21–7. The team also outshot Xavier, recording 40 attempts compared to their 31.
Senior Lexie Wolfe had a fantastic all-around game, also tying her career highs with four goals and two assists. Other contributors included Paige Counts with two goals and captain Devon Cherry, who balanced scoring with leadership throughout the match.
Looking at Marquette, they ended their last season with a commendable 10–6 record. Notably, the Golden Eagles averaged 13.94 goals per game, ranking third in the BIG EAST, alongside a strong defense that helped them dominate their opener against Eastern Michigan with a 20–9 victory. Tess Osburn was a key player in that game, chalking up seven points, while plenty of new talent shined, including freshman Dani Serrano.
Marquette returns a significant portion of its last season’s scoring, retaining 66% of its goals. This continuity, along with four players earning Preseason All-BIG EAST honors, suggests they will be a formidable opponent.
As both teams gear up for their match, expect a thrilling showdown between Cincinnati and Marquette, highlighting the growth and competitiveness in college lacrosse.
