The first-ever elected Chicago Board of Education will be sworn in Wednesday morning.
This new hybrid board has a lot on its plate. They’ll soon tackle important issues affecting the school district.
Unlike the past, where all members were selected, this board consists of ten members chosen by the mayor and ten elected by the public. This is a historic change for the district.
We’re still waiting for the mayor to appoint the 11th member for District 8, covering Back of the Yards, West Lawn, and Bridgeport.
During their first meeting, the board will elect a vice president. Ellen Rosenfeld, a newly elected member, expressed her hopes for collaboration among board members. She emphasized the need for stability and accountability for the 300,000 students in Chicago Public Schools.
“I expect everyone to come ready to work together toward long-term stability for our schools,” Rosenfeld said.
The board will also face significant challenges, like negotiating a new teachers’ contract with the Chicago Teachers Union and addressing financial instability within CPS.
This hybrid board is set to serve for two years, starting with their meeting at 10:30 a.m. in the Loop.
