Newark, N.J., March 24, 2026 – RWJBarnabas Health, along with several local partners, is building the South Ward Wellness Center in Newark. This collaborative effort aims to improve health access in underserved areas. RWJBarnabas Health has committed $3 million to this project through its Our Healthy Communities initiative.
Mark E. Manigan, RWJBarnabas Health’s CEO, emphasized their dedication to improving health outside hospital walls. The center is designed to provide better healthcare access and address the root causes of health issues, benefiting the local community.
The center will not only provide healthcare services but also include Community Health Workers (CHWs) and SNAP Navigators. This approach broadens access to essential health services, targeting the needs of Newark’s residents.
RWJBarnabas Health has invested over $151 million in community health initiatives. These programs focus on improving access to nutritious food, education, housing, and transportation. Collaboration with local leaders and organizations strengthens this initiative.
“Wellness is about prevention and access,” said Balpreet Grewal-Virk, PhD, emphasizing the importance of reaching people where they are. This new center represents a significant step towards holistic health for the community.
Residents have highlighted their needs for better healthcare, affordable food, and comprehensive support for families. The center aims to address these issues directly, reflecting what the community has long sought. According to Dominique Lee, CEO of BRICK Networks, this wellness center is more than just a building; it’s a response to what the community needs.
The new facility will span 50,000 square feet, featuring a pharmacy, rooms for health education, and a maternity health wing. Its design stems from feedback gathered during community meetings, ensuring it meets local needs. The center is expected to open in April 2027.
Nicole Fields, CEO of Saint James Health, remarked that this project will consolidate essential services, allowing families easier access to care. The wellness center is already fully funded for construction at $48 million, highlighting strong community support.
The project also features an 11,000-square-foot Express YMCA. Michael Bright, YMCA’s President, noted their focus on creating a space that integrates fitness with medical care, providing practical health solutions to families.
Support from various partners, including the Victoria Foundation and the late Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., showcases community commitment to this initiative. Craig Drinkard of the Victoria Foundation emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to enhance community health.
In summary, the South Ward Wellness Center is a groundbreaking project aimed at creating a healthier Newark. By combining health services with community resources, it stands as a model for addressing inequality in healthcare access.
