The Carolina Panthers have made a strong move to enhance their running game by signing free agent Rico Dowdle to a one-year contract worth $3 million, which could increase to $6.5 million. Dowdle, originally from Asheville, North Carolina, has had a noteworthy career, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards last season.
With Dowdle joining the team, he will serve as a backup to Chuba Hubbard. Hubbard had a fantastic year, racking up 1,195 rushing yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. Dowdle steps in to fill the void left by Miles Sanders, who was released due to contract issues.
One of the reasons the Panthers needed Dowdle is the situation with rookie Jonathon Brooks. After undergoing ACL surgery for a knee injury sustained in college, Brooks may miss most of the upcoming season. The only other running back on the roster is Emani Bailey, who has yet to see game action since signing with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted rookie.
At just 26 years old, Dowdle achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first undrafted running back in Cowboys history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, finishing with 1,079 yards last year. His breakout came mid-season after the Cowboys shifted their strategy from a committee approach to relying more heavily on him. During a five-week stretch, he logged four games with over 100 rushing yards, and he stood out by becoming the first undrafted player since Arian Foster in 2014 to achieve three consecutive 100-yard games.
In his final season with the Cowboys, Dowdle not only improved his rushing stats but also made strides in pass-catching, hauling in 39 receptions for 249 yards and three touchdowns. His journey hasn’t been without challenges; injuries sidelined him in previous seasons, but he managed to bounce back and make a significant impact when healthy.
As the Panthers look to strengthen their roster, Dowdle’s blend of talent and local ties could provide them with an exciting edge this season. This strategic acquisition may help balance the team’s offensive dynamics as Carolina prepares for the upcoming challenges in the league.
