Huskies Head to NCAA Outdoor Championships
The Washington Huskies are making waves as they prepare for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. After a successful run at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Arkansas, they secured 17 entries—the second-highest in the program’s history since the format changed in 2010.
Highlights from the Prelims
Three standout senior women added to the travel squad: Chloe Foerster, Julia David-Smith, and Chloe Thomas. Foerster is set for her third consecutive NCAA appearance in the 1,500-meters. David-Smith, competing in the 5,000-meters, aims to build on her previous experience. Meanwhile, Thomas is pushing herself with both 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter entries, a feat not accomplished by a Husky since 2021.
The competition was intense. Foerster showed her grit by finishing seventh in the 1,500-meter quarterfinals, just squeaking into the semifinal round. David-Smith and Thomas also finished sixth in their heats, with Thomas’ time securing her an automatic spot in the next round.
Notable Performances
Mia Cochran, another talented runner, faced tough competition in the 1,500-meters and narrowly missed advancing. Her seventh-place finish in her heat left her just shy of the cutoff. The same goes for freshman Chloe Symon, who set a personal best in the 800-meters but finished 13th overall.
On the technical side, Sofia Cosculluela displayed her talent in the 100m hurdles, clocking a remarkable time of 13.17 seconds, even with a slight wind aid.
Historical Context
In previous years, the number of entries and performances at the NCAA level often fluctuated. For instance, in 2022 and 2016, the Huskies had 16 entries, showcasing their growth and consistency over time. The current squad not only reflects the progress of the program but also highlights the investment in training and athletes’ dedication.
Looking Ahead
The NCAA Championships will be hosted at Hayward Field from June 10 to 13. As the Huskies gear up for this prestigious event, their journey reflects both hard work and team spirit. Expectations are high, and fans are eager to see how the Huskies will perform on this national stage.
