Exciting New $3.9M Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment Hub Coming to Covington!

COVINGTON, Va. – Exciting changes are coming to Covington with a $3.9 million renovation aimed at creating a unique facility for mental health and substance use treatment in the Alleghany Highlands.

The project, led by Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS), plans to group various programs under one roof. This approach aims to make healthcare more accessible for those living in rural areas.

Ken McFadyen, the county administrator, emphasizes the significance of this facility. “Having this center serves our community’s needs, especially with the ongoing opioid crisis,” he stated. This renovation addresses the urgency for better mental health resources.

The new center will feature clinical services, therapy offices, and a peer support area. Patients will also benefit from case management, intensive outpatient treatment, and telehealth psychiatry. These services are crucial as, according to a 2021 report from the CDC, nearly 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in the U.S. in just one year, highlighting the growing need for effective treatment.

Josh Taylor, executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, sees this project as a major boost for the community. “Bringing in $4 million in grant funding for a town of around 20,000 is incredible,” he remarked. Taylor acknowledges the trailblazing efforts of the AHCS team as they work to transform local health and wellness.

One of the goals of the center is to tackle transportation challenges that often prevent individuals from accessing care. By bringing services together, the center will create a more comprehensive safety net for those facing substance use disorders.

Ingrid Barber, the executive director of AHCS, notes that the project offers more than just substance use treatment. “We’re committed to addressing mental health and developmental disabilities, too,” Barber said, reinforcing the need for an all-encompassing approach to community health.

Construction is expected to finish next year. Leaders hope this facility will not only save lives but also reshape how rural communities access critical treatment options.
