Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has kicked off its Fall 2025 semester with a record-breaking 403 students. This includes the university’s first undergraduate class along with new graduate cohorts in various AI disciplines like Computer Science and Robotics.
The university received over 8,000 applications, making the acceptance rate a mere 5%. This speaks volumes about MBZUAI’s reputation as a top-tier institution, drawing talent not just from the UAE but worldwide, with students representing over 47 nationalities.
Timothy Baldwin, the Provost, highlighted the rapid evolution of AI. “To keep up, we constantly update our programs,” he said. This year, they are introducing both a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence with focuses on Business and Engineering and two Master’s programs in Applied AI and Data Science. The first undergraduate class consists of 115 students, with about a quarter being UAE Nationals.
Professor Baldwin emphasized how crucial it is for students to be ready for future job markets shaped by AI. “Our students don’t just learn about AI; they get hands-on experience,” he noted, aligning education with real-world needs.
Interestingly, 27.5% of the incoming graduate students come from the world’s top computer science programs, such as Cornell and Tsinghua University. This trend reflects a growing interest in AI education and talent acquisition.
To welcome new students, MBZUAI organized an Orientation Week full of activities. This week is designed to create a sense of belonging while introducing students to the university’s commitment to academic excellence. It combines educational sessions with cultural experiences, focusing on the rich heritage of the UAE.
This move towards immersive education in AI is timely. The global shift towards AI is drastic; according to a McKinsey report, AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. With these educational initiatives, MBZUAI is not just preparing students for the future but actively contributing to shaping it.
Overall, MBZUAI’s approach emphasizes modernity in education and real-world application, setting a high bar for AI programs around the globe.
