John Leyman has recently been elected as the new chair of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute. He has a long history with the organization, where he has been instrumental in initiatives to enhance New Jersey’s health insurance markets and support Comprehensive Primary Care.
Linda Schwimmer, president and CEO of the Quality Institute, praised Leyman’s experience in both government and healthcare sectors. “John’s diverse background gives him a strong perspective on healthcare issues,” she noted. This background is expected to guide the organization as it navigates challenges in the healthcare landscape.
For the past ten years, Leyman served as the director of government and regulatory affairs at Horizon BCBSNJ. He now leads state government affairs for DaVita Kidney Care, managing public policy and regulatory efforts across 13 states and D.C. Additionally, he teaches at Rutgers University’s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.
“I am honored to further the work of the Quality Institute,” Leyman stated. “This moment in healthcare is crucial. Our partnerships with policymakers and other stakeholders can make a real difference for New Jersey.”
Leyman takes over from Suzanne Miller, Ph.D., a founder of the Institute and a professor at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Alongside Leyman, Gary Mann, founder of Jasfel Analytics and chair of the New Jersey African American Chamber of Commerce, will serve as vice chair. Andrea Martinez-Mejia, the executive director of the Greater Newark Health Care Coalition, is now the board secretary, while Donald Bryan, a former acting commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, continues as treasurer.
Healthcare access and quality are vital issues today. Recent studies indicate that nearly 30% of Americans struggle to afford medical care. As Leyman and his team work on improving health care in New Jersey, their efforts could significantly impact how people receive care and manage their health.
Throughout the country, many organizations are focusing on healthcare reform. For instance, a 2023 survey by the Commonwealth Fund revealed that 66% of Americans believe reforms are needed to improve the system. This highlights the urgency for effective leadership and innovative solutions, which Leyman is well-equipped to provide.
