Suzhou-based studio Genigods Lab is developing a new action RPG called GeniGods: Nezha. This game draws clear inspiration from God of War, and it’s exciting to see it being built on Unreal Engine 5, optimized specifically for PlayStation.
Co-founders Erdi Yao and Young Lui shared that they’ve already submitted a playable version for the PS5 Pro to PlayStation China. The game will also be available on PC, taking full advantage of the PS5’s DualSense controller features.
GeniGods: Nezha immerses you in Chinese mythology. You play as Nezha, reimagined as a fierce female warrior. The storyline takes you on an epic journey, transforming from a celestial artifact to Nezha herself. Along the way, you’ll meet legendary companions like Yi and Yu, while receiving guidance from Nüwa’s Heart of Sacred Water.
The combat promises to be fast and fluid, differing from the Soulslike genre. For fans of action, there will be massive boss battles that shift between dazzling realms. You can tackle these bosses in any order, reminiscent of Mega Man, allowing you to explore and upgrade your abilities at your own pace.
Genigods Lab is known for its previous mobile title, but this project aims for a richer single-player experience with no gacha mechanics. Completing the game will take roughly 25 hours, and achieving 100% completion might stretch to 50 hours.
Interestingly, although the game has had two years of development, it isn’t expected to release until 2028. This timeline suggests it may even debut on future consoles like the PS6.
The Bigger Picture
This release adds to a growing trend of incorporating diverse cultural elements into gaming. A recent study by the International Game Developers Association revealed that 71% of game developers believe incorporating local culture enriches storytelling. This focus on cultural depth can deepen players’ connections to the game and enhance their overall experience.
While GeniGods: Nezha draws clear comparisons to familiar titles, its unique blend of mythology and innovative gameplay makes it one to watch in the coming years.
