Exciting New Era: Hulsmeyer Takes Charge of Demon Deacons Volleyball at Wake Forest University

Wake Forest has welcomed a new chapter in its volleyball program. Jeff Hulsmeyer is stepping in as the 13th head coach, bringing a wealth of experience and a familiar touch to the team. His connection with the university’s leadership, especially John Currie and Lindsey Babcock, highlights a strong foundation for success.

Hulsmeyer previously served as an assistant coach at Florida State for the past ten seasons, where he helped the Seminoles reach the NCAA Tournament consistently, except for the year it was canceled. Now, he is excited to lead an ACC program and contribute to its growth.

“I’m so grateful for this chance,” Hulsmeyer said. “Having my family with me makes it even better. Wake Forest is an incredible place, and competing in one of the top volleyball conferences is a dream.” With four children, he appreciates not having to uproot them during their high school years.

His prior coaching experience at Kansas State, under Currie, gives him confidence. “I know what it takes to succeed at this level,” he shared. Having faced the Demon Deacons as competitors, he has a clear understanding of the team’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Wake Forest volleyball started in 1971, led by the renowned Nora Lynn Finch. After a break, the team rebooted in 1996 but has yet to reach the NCAA Tournament. Hulsmeyer aims to change that. “It starts with the athletes,” he emphasized. “Wake Forest offers fantastic academics and support for all sports. We’re ready for a major leap.”

Hulsmeyer holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and has a successful coaching record. He feels positive about his initial interactions with the current squad. “They’ve welcomed me warmly, and I believe we’re on the same page about where we want to go,” he said. The team aims to create a culture of care, teamwork, and winning, making the student-athlete experience truly world-class.

With a clear vision and strong support, Hulsmeyer is eager to lead Wake Forest volleyball into a bright future. The team is poised for growth, and he believes they can achieve great things together.
