MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University (WVU) has announced that Michael T. Benson will be its next president, starting July 15. He comes from Coastal Carolina University where he served as president. His contract runs until June 30, 2030, with a base salary of $850,000, which is an increase from the current president’s salary of $800,000.
Benson is excited about this new role. “I am honored to be named president of West Virginia University — one of our nation’s oldest land-grant institutions,” he stated. With 30 years in higher education, Benson is ready to earn the trust of the WVU community.
This will be his fifth position as president of a university. Before Coastal Carolina, he led Snow College, Southern Utah University, and Eastern Kentucky University. During his time at Coastal Carolina, he achieved significant milestones, including securing a $10 million donation, the largest in the school’s history.
Benson plans to engage with various community members and alumni to enhance WVU’s offerings. WVU Board Chair Rick Pill praised Benson’s track record of increasing student enrollment and fundraising efforts, which significantly influenced their decision. Pill emphasized the importance of strong leadership as WVU adapts to the changing landscape of higher education.
The search for a new president began in May 2024 after current President Gordon Gee announced his retirement. “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Dr. Michael T. Benson to the Mountaineer family,” said Patrice Harris, WVU Board vice-chair. She acknowledged the community’s input in finding the right leader for the university.
Benson holds advanced degrees from prestigious institutions. He earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford and has taught at universities such as the University of Utah and Johns Hopkins University. His academic contributions include several books, one of which was recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the best higher education books of 2023.
Originally from Utah, Benson grew up in Texas and Indiana. He has a passion for travel and has visited all 50 states and five continents. He and his wife, Debi, have three children together. Benson’s experience and vision make him a promising leader for WVU.
