Chico State University is launching a new farm stand that brings fresh, local produce and cut flowers to the community. This exciting project opens on Wednesday, July 2, at the university farm entrance, located at 311 Nicholas C. Schouten Lane. The farm stand will be open Wednesday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon—except for July 4—and parking is free.
This initiative is more than just a farm stand; it’s a hands-on learning experience for students. Jeff Boles, who supervises crops and orchards, emphasizes that shopping here supports future leaders in agriculture. Students play vital roles in every step, from planning and planting to harvesting and selling. This experience equips them for careers in the agricultural field and beyond.
Lauren Weller, a junior in plant and soil science, is excited about the opportunity. She plans to work on her family’s rice, almond, and walnut farm after graduating. At the university farm, she enjoys teaching customers about farming processes, especially the cut flowers. “Growing and arranging flowers is a passion of mine,” she says. “It’s amazing to see them go from seed to bouquets.”
The farm stand will offer a variety of produce and flowers. Items include sweet corn for $0.75 per ear or $6 per dozen, watermelons—seedless for $10 and seeded for $5—cantaloupes for $5, local honey for $15, and bouquets of zinnias and sunflowers, ranging from $5 to $20. Both cash and card payments are accepted.
Supporting local initiatives like this farm stand is crucial as it fosters community connections and promotes sustainable agriculture. Studies show that supporting local farms boosts regional economies and helps reduce carbon footprints. By visiting, you’re not only getting fresh produce but also contributing to a healthier planet.
