INDIANAPOLIS — Lex Liss has called Haughville home for about five years. Over that time, he’s watched positive changes unfold, from improved streets to more public art. However, one thing remains a challenge: access to groceries. Locals like him often rely on convenience stores or larger chains like Kroger, which don’t always have the best selection.
That’s where the Super Jams Neighborhood Market comes in. Building on previous successes, this new business aims to serve the community by providing healthy food options around the clock. Located at 2802 W. 16th St., the market opened in late spring and strives to be an oasis in Haughville’s food desert.
The store specializes in fresh and frozen produce, meats, snacks, and even features a bakery and a small restaurant. Alongside familiar American brands, it also offers products that resonate with the growing Latino community in the area. Co-owner Paul Kumar emphasizes their commitment to customer input. “If a customer tells us we’re missing an item, we get it for them,” he says. Their approach makes every shopper feel valued, whether they spend a little or a lot.
For Liss, the store’s round-the-clock service and variety truly set it apart. “It’s convenient to grab what you need anytime,” he notes. Plus, Kumar and many staff members are bilingual, allowing for clearer communication and better service. There are plans to introduce more items, including Haitian cuisine, based on community feedback.
Kumar, originally from India, has spent years in the convenience store business. His experiences in Spain shaped his vision of creating a neighborhood-focused store. “I want to help people live healthier lives,” he explains. After years of working under others, he opened his first store, Jams, in 2022. The success led him to open Super Jams in 2023, and he’s already eyeing future locations to combat food deserts across Indianapolis.
Statistics show food deserts affect nearly 23.5 million Americans, limiting access to healthy food. Experts argue tackling this issue is essential for improving community health and well-being. Kumar hopes his store will inspire others to join the fight against food insecurity, making healthier choices more accessible for all.
As Kumar continues to adapt his offerings, he remains focused on his core mission: serving the community. “As we grow, we aim to enhance the quality of life for our neighbors,” he says, embodying the spirit of resilience that defines Haughville. With community support, the future looks bright for Super Jams and its commitment to health and accessibility.
