Exciting New Guard Agreement Empowers Thomas University Students to Serve While Keeping Up With Classes!

Thomas University (TU) has introduced a significant benefit for its student-athletes who also serve in the Georgia Army National Guard. This new agreement protects these students from being deployed during the academic year, allowing them to focus on their studies and sports.

About 6% of TU students are currently active in the military, far exceeding the national average of less than 0.5%. Since many of TU’s students are athletes—around 90%—it was important to find a way to support those balancing academics, athletics, and military service.

Josh Dean, the university’s coordinator of military affairs, mentioned that this partnership with the National Guard had been developing over the years. They already have a unique military transition football team, which stands out nationwide.

Under this new policy, student-athletes can participate in training one weekend each month and two weeks in the summer but won’t be called for federal deployment while enrolled. This is crucial for helping them stay on track for graduation.

Joshua Mosley, a recruitment officer at TU, shared that student-athletes who join the Guard will enter the Recruit Sustainment Program. While they might still be activated for local missions, they will be shielded from overseas deployment during their studies, giving them peace of mind.

In addition to tuition coverage, the Guard also provides valuable leadership opportunities, preparing students for future careers whether in the military or civilian life.

This initiative is the first of its kind in Southwest Georgia and reflects TU’s commitment to being a military-friendly institution. The blend of athletics and military service creates a supportive community for all involved.
