The Board of Trustees has announced Jared R. Tice, Ed.D., as the 18th president of the university. Tice comes with a rich background in higher education, having served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Catawba College in North Carolina. During his time there, he boosted enrollment and improved student retention rates from 62% to 77%, even amidst the challenges brought by the pandemic.

Steve Bahls, who led the search for a new president, highlighted the need for someone ready to make immediate impact. After reviewing over 100 applications, Tice emerged as the best fit for the role. He replaces Dave Kaufman, who has been president since 2020 and fostered a transformative student experience.

In his first remarks, Tice expressed a commitment to building an inclusive, student-focused community. He emphasized the importance of belonging for all students. “This presidency will belong to our students, faculty, and staff as much as it does to me,” he said, signaling a collaborative approach moving forward.

The campus community is eager to engage with Tice. Ashlyn Edwards, president of the Student Government, shared her excitement about collaborating to enhance student life. Brian King, also from Student Government, appreciates Tice’s focus on community engagement and is looking forward to his active presence on campus.

Starting August 1, Tice will lead with a vision focused on community and collaboration. In a world where student needs constantly evolve, his experience and commitment to inclusivity will be essential for the university’s growth.

Recent studies show that universities that prioritize student engagement report higher retention rates. A 2021 report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found that institutions with strong administrative support saw an average retention rate of 77%. With Tice at the helm, there’s optimism that the university will follow this trend and continue to thrive.
