Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, recently hinted at new products. In a short video, he said, “there’s something in the Air.” This likely points to new M4 MacBook Air models being announced soon.
Design
Expect two size options for the new MacBook Air: 13-inch and 15-inch. There aren’t any rumors about a design change, so they will likely look like the current models. The last redesign was in 2022, so it’s still fairly recent.
The upcoming models are expected to keep the same design.
Display
The MacBook Air will probably retain the Liquid Retina Display like its predecessors. Although Apple has mini-LED technology for the MacBook Pro, it might stay exclusive to those models.
With the recent Pro updates, Apple introduced a matte display option. While it could make its way to the MacBook Air, there’s no certainty about that.
M4 Chip
The M4 chip has already appeared in various devices like the MacBook Pro and iMac. Its inclusion in the MacBook Air is highly anticipated.
This new chip offers greater performance, but the improvements over the M3 chip are expected to be moderate, around 25% better in CPU and GPU tasks.
RAM
Expect the MacBook Air to start with 16GB of RAM, as Apple made this change last year. No shifts in this area are expected.
Battery Life
The M4 chip’s efficiency might enhance the battery life. For instance, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro can last up to 24 hours while streaming video.
FaceTime Camera
With the MacBook Pro featuring a 12-megapixel front camera, the MacBook Air may receive this update too. This camera includes features like Center Stage, which keeps you centered during video calls.
It may also support Desk View to show an overhead view of your desk during presentations.
Thunderbolt Ports
The current MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, but new models may have three Thunderbolt 4 ports for better connectivity and speed.
Similar to the MacBook Pro, the new Air should support multiple external displays.
Pricing
The existing M3 MacBook Air starts at $1,099, and no changes in pricing are anticipated.
M2 MacBook Air Discontinuation
Apple still sells an M2 MacBook Air for $999, but it may get discontinued soon. The new M3 models may take over, but Apple could decide to keep both if necessary.
Other “Air” Products?
While the focus is on the M4 MacBook Air, other products with “Air” in their name could also see updates soon. The iPad Air and AirTags are both due for refreshes in the near future.
Apple’s Announcement
Apple isn’t planning a spring event this year. It seems they might announce the MacBook Air through a press release, similar to the way they introduced the iPhone 16e.
