ALPENA — Alpena Community College (ACC) is teaming up with Central Michigan University (CMU) to create new educational pathways in psychology and political science. This means students can complete their first two years at ACC and finish their bachelor’s degree at CMU.
These partnerships aim to make education more affordable and accessible for those interested in careers in fields like psychology, public policy, and civic leadership. Students will be able to stay in the Alpena area while working on their degrees. Although their final two years will be with CMU, they can choose from various formats for their classes, including online options and video conferencing.
Dr. Amber Mclarney-Vesotski, a psychology instructor at ACC, noted the dedication of ACC students. “Many of our students balance work and family while trying to further their education. This partnership offers a clear path to a bachelor’s degree without requiring them to leave Northeast Michigan,” she said. This is crucial for students who want to complete their education but can’t sacrifice their current commitments.
The demand for trained professionals in psychology is significant in the local job market. Employers in health services and mental health are actively seeking workers with at least a bachelor’s degree. This agreement not only supports students but also helps meet workforce needs in the region.
Tim Kuehnlein, an ACC political science instructor, highlighted the importance of such programs. “Our economy needs educated professionals. Partnerships like this open doors for students in rural areas, allowing them to start their education here and move forward,” he said.
Statistics show that nearly 90% of bachelor’s degree holders find employment within six months of graduation. This is particularly relevant in fields linked to public service and policy, where a strong credential is essential for job readiness. The political science pathway responds directly to the growing need for professionals in government agencies and NGOs across Northeast Michigan.
ACC already has a political science transfer program, the Associate in Arts (AA), aimed at those wanting to advance to a four-year program. They also offer two psychology pathways: an Associate in Arts (AA) and an Associate in Science (AS). The articulation agreement notably encourages AA students to continue their education in psychology or related fields.
This partnership, according to ACC, strengthens both educational opportunities and the talent pipeline in the community. By creating these pathways, ACC continues to support student advancement and regional development, showing a commitment to the future of education in the local area.
