Exciting New Technology Unveiled by Local Police to Combat Crime and Enhance Community Safety

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – More cameras could mean fewer crimes. This is the idea behind a new initiative from local law enforcement.

“With the support of our community, we can use existing cameras to help us,” shared RPD Chief Kathryn Nance.

The program is called RTIC, or Real Time Information Center.

Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth added, “This tech will assist us not just in daily operations but during natural disasters too.”

RTIC makes it possible to access live video feeds from local businesses and homes. It uses drones, social media, and emergency databases to give police a clearer picture of ongoing events.

Nance pointed out, “Communication can be a challenge. Sometimes, what we hear on a call isn’t what we find when we arrive.”

The RTIC facility is set up at RPD’s headquarters on Kuenzli St., and it includes the City of Sparks. Nance mentioned they tested RTIC during a busy downtown event, and it worked really well.

“We had a soft launch during the Santa Crawl, and it helped with several timely arrests,” she said.

The system’s success relies on communities. The more residents and businesses that register their cameras, the more effective the system will be.
