Universal Pictures is moving ahead with a fresh take on Miami Vice, now titled Miami Vice ’85. Stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are set to lead this new film, which will be directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film aims for a summer debut on August 6, 2027, and will be shot in IMAX format.
This remake dives into the flashy and often corrupt world of Miami in the mid-1980s, paying homage to the classic TV series that not only shaped pop culture but also influenced fashion and filmmaking.
Initially, talks for Jordan and Butler’s roles surfaced last fall, but production was delayed until the fall of 2026, as the project awaited budget approval. Once that was secured, agreements with the stars quickly followed.
Dylan Clark Productions is behind the film, with Dan Gilroy, known for Nightcrawler, penning the screenplay. His script is based on characters from the original series created by Anthony Yerkovich. Universal’s Sara Scott and Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project.
Michael B. Jordan is coming off a successful run with Sinners, which sparked significant buzz and box office success. This makes Jordan a notable figure in Hollywood, recently winning multiple awards, including an Academy Award. He is also preparing to direct a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair, releasing worldwide on March 5, 2027.
Austin Butler, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in Elvis, continues to shine in varied roles. His performances in Dune: Part Two and the upcoming thriller Enemies have further established him as a leading actor.
Both stars have solid representation, with Jordan supported by 1v1 Entertainment and Butler by WME.
