AccesSurf Gains New Storage and Parking Space at Ala Wai
HONOLULU – AccesSurf, a nonprofit known for its adaptive surfing and ocean sports programs, has received a new space at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor. This space marks a significant improvement for the group, which previously stored its equipment far away in Kapolei and volunteers’ garages.
The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) has approved a Revocable Permit (RP) that allows AccesSurf to use 1,200 square feet for parking and storage. This move is crucial for the organization’s adaptive services, which cater to individuals with disabilities. Ann Yoshida, an innovation specialist with AccesSurf, highlighted how important it is to provide access to natural environments like the ocean for people with mobility challenges. Each year, AccesSurf offers around 5,000 experiences for disabled individuals.
One long-time member, Eric Walton, shared how AccesSurf has changed his life. He started with the organization 16 years ago as a volunteer, later becoming a participant, competitive athlete, and even a board member. He described the organization’s impact as “monumental.”
AccesSurf’s equipment has been scattered across different locations, making it difficult to access during training sessions near Waikīkī. Cara Short, the Executive Director, noted that managing heavy and large equipment across many places has been a challenge. The cost of nearby storage options was also a hurdle. Now, the organization will pay just $40 a month for its new space, which will include several shipping containers donated by Pasha Hawaii for equipment storage.
Board members were supportive of the permit approval and inquired about AccesSurf’s future plans. Short revealed that the group has recently expanded its programs to Maui and has also operated on Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i Island, with hopes to spread its reach across the state. All their services are free for participants, thanks to the dedication of numerous volunteers.
After the unanimous approval, there were moments of celebration among board members and AccesSurf staff. BLNR Chair Dawn Chang expressed her joy over the positive decision, benefiting not only the organization but also the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor and the wider Waikīkī community.
