Hyderabad: Exciting changes are coming to Indian football! The I-League, India’s second-tier football league, has been officially renamed. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced this on social media, confirming that the new name will be the Indian Football League starting in the 2025-26 season.
Ten teams are ready to compete in a shortened tournament, kicking off on February 21. In a recent meeting, AIFF officials and club representatives discussed the rebranding and other important changes for the league’s governance.
Historically, the I-League was known as the National Football League (NFL) from 1996 to 2007 before it became the I-League. Over the years, the introduction of the Indian Super League (ISL) shifted the I-League to a second-tier status.
Recently, the Goan club Churchill Brothers was declared champions of the last season, but controversy arose when the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) named Inter Kashi as the true winners. Churchill Brothers have taken their case to the Delhi High Court, and it remains unresolved.
The teams participating in the upcoming Indian Football League include Diamond Harbour, Real Kashmir, Gokulam Kerala, Rajasthan United, Dempo SC, Namdhari FC, Shillong Lajong, Sreenidi Deccan, Aizawl FC, and Chanmari FC.
The ISL is also set to begin on February 14, just a week before the Indian Football League. This season’s kickoff marks an important new chapter for Indian football, especially after the recent turmoil in the sport. Both leagues now have clear schedules and broadcast partnerships, promising fans an exciting season ahead.
This reshaping of the leagues reflects not only a renewed focus on the sport but also a recognition of the growing popularity of football in India. As more fans engage through social media and community events, the future of Indian football looks bright.
