Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is excited to announce that Dr. Alexis I. Ehrhardt will become its next vice president for government relations, starting on December 8. With over 20 years of experience in higher education and public policy, she is well-prepared for this role.
Currently, Ehrhardt is the executive director for state government relations at the University of Virginia (UVA). There, she has led efforts to connect the university with the governor’s office and state agencies. Her work has emphasized building relationships that benefit both education and the community.
VCU President Michael Rao praised her as a leader who understands how universities can drive economic growth and improve public health. “Her commitment to lifting up all Virginians aligns perfectly with VCU’s mission,” he said.
At UVA, Ehrhardt developed legislative strategies and collaborated with various stakeholders. She expressed enthusiasm for her new position, looking forward to building partnerships that will strengthen Virginia’s higher education landscape. “It was an honor to serve UVA,” she mentioned, acknowledging the talented individuals she worked with.
Before her time at UVA, Ehrhardt served as president and CEO of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. She has also held positions at Averett University and Danville Community College, fostering connections among education, business, and community groups. Her depth of experience in community engagement will be pivotal for her new role at VCU.
Ehrhardt has lived in Virginia for 25 years and has dedicated herself to public service. She has been involved with several organizations, including the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and Lead Virginia, aiming to improve lives across the state.
She holds a Doctor of Education degree in leadership studies from the University of Lynchburg, a master’s in higher education from UVA, and a bachelor’s degree in Latin American and Caribbean studies from Emory University.
This appointment comes at an interesting time. According to recent statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics, public university enrollment in Virginia has increased by 10% over the past five years. This growth presents both challenges and opportunities for educational leaders like Ehrhardt as they work to align governmental policies with the needs of students.
The rising demand for accessible education makes the role of vice president for government relations crucial. As more students seek higher education, building strong partnerships can lead to innovative solutions for funding and resources.
With Ehrhardt at the helm, VCU looks to strengthen its impact in Virginia. Her experience may prove vital in navigating the intersection of education, public policy, and community development.
