AMC Entertainment is shaking things up in the cinema world. In an exciting deal with CJ 4DPlex, they plan to open 65 new auditoriums with innovative ScreenX and 4DX technology worldwide. This includes AMC locations in the U.S., making it the first rollout of these advanced formats in the country.
The partnership will add 40 4DX auditoriums and 25 ScreenX locations across the U.S. and Europe, with the first ScreenX theaters set to launch this summer. The goal is to complete the installations by 2027.
So, what exactly are ScreenX and 4DX? ScreenX provides a unique 270-degree viewing experience using three screens to immerse viewers in the action. Moviegoers will enjoy the latest Barco laser projectors, top-notch sound systems, and comfy recliner seating. Meanwhile, 4DX enhances films with motion-based seats, and effects like wind, scents, and even rain to give audiences a real feel of the movie’s environment.
Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPlex America, shared that this collaboration aligns with their largest-ever slate of films for both formats. Upcoming films designed for these advanced theaters include major releases from big studios, like Warner Bros. and Marvel. Titles like "A Minecraft Movie," "Thunderbolts," and "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" are just a taste of what’s to come.
Adam Aron, chairman and CEO of AMC, expressed excitement about this partnership. He stressed that it marks a significant step in delivering cutting-edge experiences, helping AMC stay at the forefront of cinema innovation.
As part of this deal, CJ 4DPlex will expand its global reach to about 1,200 screens, including approximately 430 ScreenX installations and 780 4DX auditoriums. CJ 4DPlex CEO Jun Bang mentioned that joining forces with AMC, the world’s largest movie exhibitor, highlights the growing popularity of these cinematic technologies.
AMC itself is a giant in the industry, operating around 900 theaters and over 10,000 screens. It also manages brands like Odeon Cinemas in Europe, where they already have six existing ScreenX theaters.
In recent years, cinema technology has dramatically evolved. Audiences now crave immersive experiences, and trends show that theaters offering these innovations attract more viewers. Studies indicate that theaters with advanced formats like ScreenX and 4DX can draw larger crowds and create loyal customers, especially among younger audiences who value unforgettable moments at the movies.
Overall, AMC’s partnership with CJ 4DPlex promises to transform the moviegoing experience. As they implement these new technologies, movie lovers may find themselves captivated by the next level of storytelling in theaters.
