Apple is reportedly exploring a new feature for its Watch — a built-in camera. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, this camera would allow the watch to “see” the world and use artificial intelligence for smart interactions.
These advanced watches are still a few years away, but they are on Apple’s roadmap. The company plans to include cameras in both the standard Series and Ultra models. Interestingly, each model will have a different camera design. In the Series model, the camera will be integrated into the display, similar to the front-facing lens on an iPhone. For the Ultra version, the camera will be located on the side, near the crown and button. This setup means users could scan objects more easily with the Ultra model than with the Series model.
Despite this innovative approach, reports suggest that the camera may not support video calls like FaceTime, given the small screens of the watches.
Meanwhile, Apple seems to be struggling to keep up in the AI space. Competitors like Amazon, Google, and Samsung are advancing quickly with smarter AI features. Recently, Apple announced delays for upgrades to its Siri assistant, which many believe are necessary to catch up. Robby Walker, who leads Siri at Apple, has acknowledged that these delays have been disappointing, especially after the company had promoted Siri’s capabilities heavily.
This isn’t just a minor shake-up for Apple. The company has seen leadership changes in its AI department, with Tim Cook removing John Giannandrea, the former head of AI. In his place is Mike Rockwell, known for his work on the Vision Pro, signifying a shift in strategy for Siri.
Luc Julia, one of Siri’s original designers, noted that Apple’s tendency for perfectionism might be slowing down improvements. He remarked that the company is falling behind because of a fear of imperfection. Interestingly, Julia revealed that Siri was initially developed by SRI International before being acquired by Apple in 2010 due to Steve Jobs’ keen interest in the technology.
