The Arkansas Tech University (ATU) Department of English and World Languages recently announced the winners of its annual creative writing scholarship contest for high school seniors. This contest celebrates young talent and encourages students to express themselves through writing.
Here are this year’s winners:
- First Place: Julian Robertson from Marshall High School – $1,500
- Second Place: Alivia Key from Prescott High School – $1,000
- Third Place: Bailey Potter from Marshall High School – $1,000
- Fourth Place: Hannah Neighbors from Fountain Lake High School – $500
- Fifth Place: Teagan Wolfgram from Two Rivers High School – $500
- Sixth Place: Ella Lovell from Valley Springs High School – $500
Julian’s winning piece will be featured in the spring 2026 issue of Nebo, ATU’s student-edited literary journal. This gives him a fantastic platform to showcase his writing.
The submissions were evaluated by experienced faculty members from the department, including Dr. Claire Kortyna, Dr. Mary Sharpe, Dr. Stan Lombardo, and Eli Cranor. Their expertise ensures that the competition remains fair and recognizes the best talent.
Creative writing is important, especially today. According to a recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts, less than 50% of adults in the U.S. read literature in 2021, a considerable drop from previous years.
