Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced an exciting development: a Vande Bharat Sleeper train will soon connect Bengaluru and Mumbai. This announcement was made during a virtual event where a new express train service was also launched between the two cities. The sleeper service aims to enhance comfort for overnight travelers while making journeys more efficient.
This new train will run from KSR Bengaluru to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. It is noteworthy for being the second Vande Bharat Sleeper train in India, following the first one that began operations in January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, cutting travel time significantly.
In Karnataka, the connectivity is on the rise. Currently, there are 12 pairs of Vande Bharat trains operating across 14 districts. Testing is underway for a new route from Bengaluru to Mangaluru, which focuses on improving coastal travel.
The railway infrastructure in Karnataka has seen an impressive expansion since 2014, with around 1,750 kilometers of new tracks laid. Notably, significant electrification work has been completed on the Hassan-Mangaluru route.
Experts believe these developments can boost economic growth by improving trade routes and access to urban centers. A recent survey from the Indian Railways indicated that faster travel options, like the Vande Bharat trains, are attracting more passengers. Nearly 70% of respondents expressed they would choose train travel over other modes due to the modern amenities offered.
Moreover, this initiative aligns with a broader strategy to increase railway capacity and cater to growing urban populations. As India invests in transportation, the focus is on enhancing both passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Overall, the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train signifies a step forward in making long-distance travel more comfortable and accessible in India.
