Buzz Williams is set to lead the Maryland Men’s Basketball team as their new head coach. The announcement came from Colleen Sorem, the Interim Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. Fans can look forward to his official introduction during a press conference at XFINITY Center on April 2.

Williams has a strong coaching history, including 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and 13 seasons with at least 20 wins out of his 18 years as a head coach. "This is an honor," he expressed. "I thank President Pines and Colleen for this chance to lead such a renowned program."

Sorem commented on Williams’ impressive background, noting his work ethic and commitment to building a strong team. She mentioned, "He embraces the high expectations here at Maryland, and we’re eager to start this new chapter in Maryland basketball."

President Darryll J. Pines also shared his enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of having a leader who prioritizes both competitive success and the growth of student-athletes. With a remarkable overall record of 373-228 (.621), Williams stands out not just for his wins, but for his dedication to player development.

Before joining Maryland, Williams coached at Texas A&M, where he led the team to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons. His accolades include being named the SEC Coach of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2023. His coaching journey started at New Orleans and continued through Marquette and Virginia Tech, showcasing his ability to succeed at various programs.

One notable achievement is that Williams has won over 100 games at Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Texas A&M. He aims to become the third coach ever to hit that milestone at four different schools, joining legends like Lefty Driesell and Steve Alford.

This past season, Williams led Texas A&M to a strong 23-11 record and a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance. His teams have consistently performed well, averaging nearly 21 wins each season.

In addition to his coaching prowess, Williams has significantly impacted the community through initiatives like "Buzz’s Bunch," which supports young people with special needs. This program has grown to over 500 members across cities where Williams has coached, providing meaningful connections to the game.

Williams’ extensive experience includes coaching and developing numerous players who later entered the NBA, contributing to around $400 million in total player salaries. His background is particularly unique as he did not play college basketball himself; instead, he earned valuable experience as a student assistant.
